Meet Cain

This 9-year-old Dream Kid has a lot of energy, he’s active, creative, and loves to learn new things!

9-year-old Dream Kid Cain was always an active kid – he loved playing hockey, biking, hiking, and skiing. But in 2021, Cain’s life completely changed.

Over the holidays, Cain’s parents noticed he was limping. On New Year’s Eve, his parents took him for an X-ray in Minnedosa that revealed something unsettling. The next day, they were driving into Winnipeg for an MRI and CT scan.

The scans and tests revealed Cain’s parent’s worst fear: Cain had cancer. A high grade, aggressive osteosarcoma tumour on his right tibia bone.

A treatment plan was immediately developed for Cain. He underwent 29 weeks of chemotherapy, with surgery occurring on week 11 to remove the tumour from his leg.

In April, after two cycles of chemotherapy, Cain had surgery to remove the tumour on his leg. This was a two-step process; the first surgery was 12 hours long and removed the tumour/tibia bone from Cain's leg.

The second surgery on May 12 was to insert a new tibia. The surgery was very complex and took 16 hours to complete. During the 6 weeks where Cain had these surgeries, he did not do chemo as he needed to recover.

Later that month, Cain’s chemotherapy began again, and he was fitted with a plastic brace for his leg to ensure it could heal properly. Cain also had regular hearing tests, heart EKG/ultrasounds, and kidney tests to ensure the chemotherapy wasn’t damaging his organs.

In October 2022, Cain finished chemotherapy and is now in remission. He has had lots of follow-up and will continue to be closely monitored for the next few years to make sure the cancer does not return. He will eventually require an additional leg surgery at some point to limit the difference in his leg lengths.

Now, Cain is slowly recovering. His hair has all grown back and he is getting his energy back. As he recovers, Cain needs to use a wheelchair, but he has a passion for finding new ways to do things and new hobbies. Cain’s creativity through crafts, Lego, and movie making with his critters and creations. Since going into remission, Cain has even started learning how to use a sledge to skate and has been playing on a hockey team in Brandon!

With all the time Cain has spent in the hospital for chemotherapy, surgeries, and tests, he’s missed out on a lot of the fun of being a kid. That’s where you come in! Your support will help give Cain a Dream come true, and the opportunity to make happy childhood memories.
